Tonight I was watching Lethal Weapon on HDNet (yet another thing I watch just because it's in HD. What is it with that?). Anyhow, was watching the jumper scene, where Mel and jumper guy jump off the ledge together, and I remembered in some sort of flash of nostalgia or whatever you'd call it, exactly my thoughts when I first saw it.
And it wasn't the fact that the "handcuffs" break just as they jump off, right before they grab hands. I'd never noticed that. But I remember when they landed in the air bag. And I guess I didn't realize that firemen did that for jumpers, that they set up air bags. I only thought they existed for stuntmen in the movies. And I remember thinking (this was '87, so 11 years old or so?), "Why the fuck did they show the stuntmen landing on the airbag?" And it puzzled me, but I dropped it. I basically thought that the filmmakers had fucked up and edited the scene wrong, ended up showing us how the stunt was performed, but didn't let it bother me enough to wonder what I thought the script might have called for instead. If they weren't supposed to land in an airbag, then they're dead, and there's no movie. But I didn't think that. Only that, Oh god, the secrets of moviemaking leaked through to the masses. Cover it up, cover up!
How's that for a young Film Fop? Anyhow, no real reason to share this. And what better way to start this thread.
