I've been kicking around this idea for some time now (and by that, I mean, it's crossed my mind more than once on the train ride to and from work); so, I figure I might as well just start doing it. It's basically a song of the day. Or week. Or bi-weekly. Or tri-weekly. Whatever strikes my fancy. I listen to the shit-ton of music on my iPod, and while I don't have the copious amounts of time (or a sturdy computer) to be cranking out mixtapes like I used to (not that many folks listened to them much, anyways), I do have time to give you one good song. Could be a new song, could be an old song. I may have a story or some history on the song, personal or otherwise, or I may just say "here you go". When I can, I'll link to an mp3. Otherwise, I'll link to a place where you can easily listen to it online (like the Hype Machine or Last.fm). But, if any catches your fance, and you want the mp3 -- just let me know, and I can email it to you (because I probably have it). So, here you go. Your first song is "The Prisoner" by the Clash. It's off their 1980 b-side compilation EP, "Black Market Clash". When I think of my favorite Clash songs, there are a usual group of tracks that come to mind quickly -- but as I was listening to "Black Market Clash" this morning, this one came on and immediately caught me. Great driving force to the song, great chorus. Good times. Posts: 4165 02/15/08 12:01 PM the Maestro	Well, fourteen views, that's not bad. So, I know folks are reading (and maybe listening). I can deal with that. Today's song is: Okkervil River - Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe There are two things I will profess to like about this song. 1.) Many of you no longer live in New York, but this is a perfect example of the "step out your front door and push play" track. You put in your headphones, the song starts up, and you begin your trek down the street and to work. A theme for the opening of your day, if you will. I'd be quite proud to have this as my daily opening. 2.) I'm a sucker for songs where you can really hear the singer putting every ounce of himself into the vocals. Those moments where you can feel him using the last of the breath in his lungs, where his eyes are squeezed shut and sweat is pouring down his forehead. I appreciate these moments because they're a pseudo-physical way to express the passion that a good song can inspire in you. It's why people love a game like "Rock Band" so much -- for that brief moment, you can experience (on a smaller scale) the feeling of a song. And without learning to actually play the guitar or needing the innate talent to write music, either. Anyways, I dig this one, and I dig the band. Posts: 4172 02/20/08 11:34 AM the Maestro	One of my favorite artists, Mike Doughty, had a new album drop yesterday. Today's song is from that album, "Golden Delicious" -- it's called "Ft. Hood". There's a great segment from "All Things Considered" this past weekend where Mike talks about this song. On his blog, he described the song as being "about my own guilt for living life without thinking of the war every moment." He had been invited by the USO to visit Walter Reed the last time he was in D.C.; He and a friend went over to give CDs to wounded guys, most of them in their 20s, most missing limbs. "It was tremendously moving. As we left the hospital, I was thinking that I wanted to never lose that feeling I felt, of incredible gratitude for everything in life." My favorite section is the part in the bridge about what he wishes what "a guy in his 20s was doing instead of being scarred by a fucked-up war": "You should be getting stoned with a prom dress girl / You should still believe in an endless world / You should blast Young Jeezy with your friends in a parking lot..." The tinkling piano captures the essence of falling flakes; the bouncy tune mimicks the secret joy filling New Yorkers' hearts at the possibilities presented by the white canvas across the streets (and the suggestions of a Snow Day). Even the chorus joins in the fun -- with the words "Ba ba ba, ba ba ba, ba ba ba, bap ba ba ba ba!" sounding very much like "Obama! Obama! Obama! bap ba ba ba ba!" as we ruminate on last night's debate. This is the song for today. *And, as a special week-ending bonus, I present you with a song for the weekend. A highly enjoyable track from the nerd-music overlord: Jonathan Coulton - "Re: Your Brains". It's a rollicking folksie-rock ditty sung by one of your former office-mates (who happens to currently be a zombie). I lurve this track. ...All I ask in return is one little click on your part. I don't need people to reply, telling me whether you dig this little feature or not (but, if you'd like to, that's groovy). But, I see people reading -- yet I have not heard hide nor hair -- so, if you could take two seconds to hit that little "thumbs up"/Kudos button at the top of the thread I'd feel much better. Posts: 4193 02/28/08 10:04 PM the Maestro	Note: This is written in present tense, but took place last August. I'm getting on a small-ish plane at the airport; a late-night flight to Portland, Maine. After rushing directly to the airport after work, standing for interminable hours in the security line -- convinced that I won't make the flight -- and wolfing down some McDonald's cheeseburgers, I'm finally relaxing. The Dramamine I took twelve minutes ago is finally starting to kick in, making me feel a little warm -- like I've just woken up from a nap. It's dark outside; the clean blue lights of the runway reflect off the glass of the window next to me. As we take off, I put my earphones in and search for an album on my iPod, settling on the new one from Andrew Bird. The first song begins, and I'm swept away by the music as we turn around -- Manhattan and Queens glowing up to me from below. For the first time all night, I'm able to let all the tension and anxiety of traveling fall away. The song allows me to release it all as I sit there in the darkness of the cabin. Flying at night is very soothing to me. I love this song. I listen to it for a second time. I close my eyes. I softly sing along to the song as it swells in my head: "..To save all our lives you've got to envision... the fiery crash... It's just a formality... Why must I explain? Just a nod to mortality..." Then, as the music drops out for a second, I hear the next lyric: "Before you get on a plane." I pause, realizing what the song is about (for the very first time). The idea of my plane going down flickers through my head. But it doesn't upset me. Sorta like when you're standing on a subway platform and the possibility of someone pushing you in front of the train crosses your mind. I look out the window; see twinkling towns sleeping a few thousand feet away. I push a button on my iPod and listen to the song again. Why not? It's a great song. I love this fucking song. Posts: 4201 03/05/08 12:47 PM the Maestro	This afternoon has two songs from the same band: Wilco. They were a band that I always felt I should get myself into, but never found the time to do it until I received a copy of "A Ghost Is Born". I was hooked. The first song is "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", from their near-universally-praised (and infamous) record, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; it is also the title of a documentary about all the drama surrounding the album. (For those that don't know, long story short: Wilco made this album. The record company, Reprise, didn't like it -- not enough "pop crossover potential" -- declined to release it. Wilco is dismissed from the label, and offers to pay to get the rights of the album back -- the label decides to give it to them for free. They put the album up on their website. People love it. Downloads go through the roof. There is a bidding war from labels to buy the album from Wilco -- they eventually sign with Nonesuch. Both Reprise and Nonesuch were owned by AOL/Time Warner. Geniuses.) I love the slow build of this song -- it has an ephemeral quality that works so well with the melody that comes in later. After hearing it, I usually end up singing "I. Am trying. To break your heart." to myself over and over for a few days. In a good way. The second track is "I'm the Man Who Loves You" -- from the same album -- undeniably one of my favorite Happy Songs of all time. The two make a tantalizing pair. While "IATTBYH" makes me see my breath billowing in the cold air as I walk down the city street all by myself; "ITMWLY", bookended by pleasantly fuzzy guitar solos, kicks into a bouncy-strumming-and-rocking jaunt that makes me see flowers and butterflys all around. And yet, both songs are basically about the same thing.

Posts: 4203 03/11/08 8:44 AM the Maestro	In honor of the fact that one of my favorite television shows of all-time has come to an end, I bring you today's song: "Way Down In The Hole." Originally a Tom Waits song from "Frank's Wild Years", The Wire used a different version of the tune for each of it's five seasons. The different artists are: The Blind Boys of Alabama (season one), Tom (season two), The Neville Brothers (three), "DoMaJe" (a group of Balmore teenagers who recorded it specifically for the season four) and Steve Earle (season five -- who also happens to play the role of "Walon" on the show). Do yourself a favor and watch the show from the beginning. You won't regret it.

I can't say I know what Tweedy's true intentions behind the song was, but personally, I took it to be a song primarily about his drinking (and the lost/fucked relationships and broken hearts that stem naturally from it). Tweedy himself would be pleased at our subjective individual interpretations. The "I am an American aquarium drinker" line is one of my favorites; and though it gives me certain images (drinking huge quantities of alcohol -- i.e., "drinking like a fish"), he doesn't necessarily have specific meaning behind all of his lines -- some are written because of the way they sound and make him feel. There's something about that line that makes me enjoy just how it sounds. But, as Tweedy said in the documentary about YHF: "The record is the thing that you're making … and there are a million ways that that thing can be."

That hook of identity for the listener. Posts: 237 03/14/08 10:20 AM	Last bit on the "I am trying to break your heart"...it was also my Wilco gateway song...the first one I really tagged into. Sweet. You all familiar with Aqueduct? I've spent the morning listening to "You'll Get Yours" off the Or Give Me Death album, (I highly recommend, also recommended by me is I Sold Gold), it's a funny-sweet-sad-hilarious-again-song that sounds like it was written while listening to Randy Newman's first album, the spectacular Randy Newman...at least the first 2 tracks...crazy. Another notable channeling on Or Give Me Death is, "As You Wish (DTAS)" which is all about "The Princess Bride"...it's nuts...beautiful, beautiful nuts and a pean to those misspent days of my youth where I'd skip school and watch "Princess Bride" 3 times in a row...because we didn't have cable, and had only four videocassettes...three of which were bad. Also, what's proper format for song titles and album titles...what do you italicize, underline and stick in quotes? 'Cause I'm sure it's no big deal, but I genuinely don't know...and I'm too lazy to look it up.

But after checking them (him) out online, I can definitely say I will be soon. runs off to iTunes music store I wasn't able to find "You'll Get Yours" online anywhere, so I'll have to buy it. But I did find a recording of "As You Wish", which I thought was hands-down fantastic. It's officially the song of the day. It's a great, catchy song (even without "The Princess Bride" references). I never expected to hear "Dear God what is that thing!" infused with such pop sensibility... [And as for proper format -- I leave that up to you, my friend. My own personal habit is to use quotes around song titles (i.e., "Attack of the Mole Men") and underline or italicize album titles (i.e., Dawn of the Dickies / Dawn of the Dickies). But, I say go with what feels right.]

Posts: 4228 03/26/08 10:43 AM the Maestro	Got the new Counting Crows album from the wife last night (i.e., from The Late Show), and was able to listen to half of it on the way into work. First impressions so far are good -- the "buzz" saying it's a return to form might not be too far off the mark. Definitely more of a real rock-n-guitar sense to the first half, which is produced by the same guy who did Satellites. (It's split into two 'halves' -- Saturday Nights / Sunday Mornings.) The Saturday Nights section finishes with a song that definitely caught my attention. It's probably my favorite song of theirs since Goldie forced me to listen to Recovering the Satellites all those years ago. Check it out. Posts: 4242 04/08/08 2:58 PM the Maestro	This is a track I meant to put up last week, but got lost in the shuffle of work and other such things...I had the good fortune to receive an early copy of the new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album, "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!", from a friend who went to London (where it's been out for a while). It is finally being released today, and I have to give it the Kluv double-thumbs up. It's a sure-fire early candidate for my "Favorite Albums of 2008" list. Nick has been an artist I've always admired -- he's always come across to me as a guy who knows what he wants to do, and he isn't afraid to do it. (Hell, I remember borrowing a DVD from a friend of a movie that Cave had written the screenplay for: it was great -- much better than that "Yuma" horseshit...) Most of Nick & the Bad Seeds' music would be rightfully considered "dark", or "ominous". But there are also moments of great beauty -- his 2004 Double-Album, "Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus", you can find truly striking love songs aside the haunting odes. Then he struck out with a side project that he and some other members of the Seeds came up with: Grinderman. If you heard the track "No Pussy Blues" from Grinderman, you know that it was a much different beast than stuff the Bad Seeds had done before -- it was guitar driven garage rock. (Fun fact about "No Pussy Blues" -- when he was asked in an interview if there was a deeper meaning to the song, Nick replied: "No, it's just about not getting any pussy.") Fast forward to the new Nick & the Bad Seeds Album -- "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" -- and you can hear that the guitar-driven-muse has not left him yet. Luckily for us, it gives us one of the tightest, most accessable, and -- above all -- enjoyable albums I've heard in some time. All the songs are focused well, crafted well and executed well. Which brings us to the song of the day: "Albert Goes West", off the latest album. I'm not sure if I can pinpoint what it is about the song that I love so much. Part of it is the raw, driving guitar & rhythm of the track. Part of it is how it mixes a wandering western-type theme with a dance song (complete with "Sha-la-la's"). Mostly it's because I enjoy singing the lyrics, like: "He grew so wan, he grew so sick, he ended up in a bungalow ...sucking a revolver." But, honestly, I'd listen to almost anything Nick wanted to give me. He's one of the uglier men in rock, he's balding with long hair, and he has a nasty handlebar mustache that he wears without irony.
