The ACLU has again done what you would think the press should do, and thru a Freedom of Information request, acquired John Yoo's controversial
"torture memo". Basically, it says
that in a time of war, the President can do whatever he wants to protect America. Greenwald today and even this week's This American Life point out that the arguments laid out here regarding presidential power
have gone beyond decisions and power on the battlefield. It's become that in a time of war, the President can do whatever he wants, period.
Just as Nixon told Frost: "When the president does it that means it is not illegal." |

Great piece from Greenwald on why the press should be ashamed of themselves: Every day, it becomes more difficult to blame George Bush, Dick Cheney and
comrades for their seven years (and counting) of crimes, corruption and destruction of our political values. Think about it this way: if you were a high
government official and watched as -- all in a couple of weeks time -- it is revealed, right out in the open, that you suspended the Fourth Amendment,
authorized torture, proclaimed yourself empowered to break the law, and sent the nation's top law enforcement officer to lie blatantly about how and why
the 9/11 attacks happened so that you could acquire still more unchecked spying power and get rid of lawsuits that would expose what you did, and the political
press in this country basically ignored all of that and blathered on about Obama's bowling score and how he eats chocolate, wouldn't you also conclude
that you could do anything you want, without limits, and know there will be no consequences? What would be the incentive to stop doing all of that?

Thanks to B. I read that guys blog every day and I am awestruck. I have long noticed a pattern of deliberate public and media ignorance every time any
question of substance comes up with regards to this presidency, its intentions, actions and "facts". I've always assumed that this
administration was incessantly lying to us and ruining our country in profound and sinister ways, (I love conspiracy theories and am naturally inclined toward
them). But now, I'm realizing just how pathetic and insufficient my conspiratorial imaginings have been...and that's a big "wow".

So, my boss happens to be going to the DNC and the RNC this year. The band scheduled to play at the DNC happens to be the Black Eyed Peas -- who, regardless of
what you think about them, are a fairly contemporary band. The kids love 'em, as they say. One of 'em even happened to write a song for Obama. Yes. We.
Can.
The RNC? Well, their choice couldn't have been more on the nose if they tried. The Charlie Daniels Band. |

Honest to god, here's John McCain's answer to what drew him to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate:
"Obviously, I found her to be very intelligent and very well-versed on the issues. But I think the important thing was that she's a reformer. She's taken on special interests since she ran for the PTA and the city council and mayor. The courage, I guess, is what most impressed me." Yes indeed. The sheer COURAGE to stand up to the powerful and greedy SPECIAL INTERESTS in the PTA! Al Qaeda's got nothing on the PTA. |

Dear President Bush,
I am just a simple family man living in the midwest. I have hit upon financial hardships lately, and am having trouble trying to make ends me for me and my family. I lost my job recently. I took out a second mortgage, and took all the money to Vegas and put it on number 32 black. The number did not come up, so now I am broke. Please bail me out, too. I know it was probably a bad choice to put all that money on one number in roulette, but I've learned my lesson. Thanks, Small Town Hank |

I pretty much stay away from headlines that don't really pertain to the race, but I can't help but see these: Are there really like a dozen articles
about Palin's glasses? Who the fuck cares where she got her glasses? And how long the wait is? What the fuck is going on?
